Local siblings in Athens for World Scholar’s Cup

Three learners from Mitchell House are currently taking part in the global round of the World Scholar’s Cup that is hosted in Athens, Greece. Concurrent global rounds are taking place in Hanoi in Vietnam and Cape Town.
Siblings Faizaan, Ameera and Ismail Gani qualified for this round of the competition held in Polokwane last Monday. Should they go through in Athens the Tournament of Champions at Yale University in the United States of America is their next destination.
World Scholar’s Cup facilitator, Tlou Mashitisho explained that the Gani’s took part in both the Johannesburg Round and the Limpopo Round. “They initially qualified at the Johannesburg Round earlier in May 2017 and the family decided to participate in the Athens Global Round. They are the only children from Polo­kwane attending the Global Round in Athens. Other qualifying teams are more likely to participate in the Cape Town Global Round,” Mashitisho reckoned.
En route to OR Tambo International Airport on Friday, proud mother of the trio Kaamila Ismael said to Polokwane Observer that she was very excited to join the group for the visit to Athens. “We are flying out later today and look forward to a worthwhile experience,” Ismael said.
The event is organised by World Scholar’s Cup, an international foundation that was founded in 2007 and that is based in Los Angeles, California. The competition brings together over 20 000 learners from 50 countries over the globe and its goal is to inspire in young people of all backgrounds a love of learning, a confidence in new skills and a sense of global citizenship. Teams consisting of three members are participating in team debates, collaborative writing, scholar’s challenge and scholar’s bowl.
