Order restored after protest at local school
All has returned to normal at Curro Northern Academy after learners embarked on protest action on Friday against an increase in the tuck shop prices.
POLOKWANE – The learners were unhappy with the increased prices and burnt dustbins and marched with placards saying the ‘tuck shop must fall’.
One of the learners spoke with Review on condition of anonymity about the protest. “The tuck shop prices increase weekly and we cannot find it difficult to understand why. It was a personal choice to either buy from the tuck shops or from one of the nearby shops but since the school changed this so we could only buy from the tuck shop we refuse to do so until they reduce the prices.”
Northern Academy Spokesperson, Lentsa Motau, said a misunderstanding between the school tuck shop and the learners led to the protest action. “We managed to handle and resolve the matter and the strike didn’t disturb any academic proceedings as it was a photo day at the school. We also want to refute the rumours that the matric dance was cancelled due to the strike. It is still set to take place on 28 September and everything at the school is back to normal.”
