This year’s DStv iRock Limpopo festival, of which Polokwane Observer is a print media sponsor, is expected to take place from 21 to 24 September and for the first time ever festival organisers plan to host an iRock Jazz Legends concert at Sun Meropa Gardens on 22 September where the legendary Hugh Masekela will top the bill.
“We are elated to have South African musical royalty, Hugh Masekela on the DStv iRock Limpopo weekend line-up. The musical legend will bring a sophisticated edge to the festival with his signature Afro-Jazz sound, which will appeal to and attract a brand-new audience to the iRock music festivals,” says Nomsa Chabeli Mazibuko, General Manager for Marketing at MultiChoice.
Masekela will perform alongside Limpopo’s very own legendary musician, Dr Thomas Chauke and another Southern gem, acoustic soul singer and composer, Gemma Griffiths.
The gates to iRock Jazz Legends will open at 19:15 and tickets are available from Computicket at R280 for general access and
R1 250 for VIP access, which includes an open bar, food and parking.

The DStv iRock Music Festival will kick off on Thursday, 21 September with a Comedy Festival featuring David Kau at the Jack Botes Hall. Jazz Legends with Hugh Masekela will take place on Friday, 22 September, while the iRock Main Event with headliners like Cassper Nyovest, Amanda Black, Sands, Euphonik, Shomadjozi, Culoe de Song and Kwesta will be at the Polokwane Cricket Club on Saturday, 23 September. iRock in the Park with the sultry sounds of Shekinah will end off the weekend on Sunday, 24 September.
Entertainers who think they have what it takes to be the opening act to any of these performers, should head to Seshego Circle from 10:00 to 15:00 on Saturday, 26 August where they will meet judges DJ Ganyani, former Teargas member Ma’E, and comedian, Mashabela while they get a taste of the DStv iRock Battle for the Stage competition.
This year’s iRock Limpopo Music Festival is presented by DStv in association with Standard Bank, Hunters, Polokwane Municipality, Mall of the North, Limpopo Tourism Agency, Polokwane Observer and Daily Sun.
