Westenburg’s nightingale spreads hope

Mapaseka Phiri is a Gr 12 learner at Westenburg Secondary School with the voice of a songbird and big dreams.

POLOKWANE – She first discovered her talent in primary school when she realised people loved hearing her sing and she cultivates this talent, she says, by singing at least five songs in church each week.

“My mother used to ask me to sing for her guests whenever she had visitors. It was annoying at first but as I grew older I realised I have a singing talent which my mother saw even before I did. I would love to pursue a career as a singer but I first want to further my studies by getting a bachelor of commerce in economics so I have a qualification to fall back on. I believe education is the key to success and the also the key to ending poverty in our communities,’’ she says.

The 18-year-old says she wishes to become independent and help to heal people with her singing talent as she knows many people who suffer in silence with various issues and some end up taking their own lives, especially teens such as herself who don’t know how to work through their issues.

“Music heals and you don’t have to respond to it, all you have to do is listen and let the emotions flow out of you, resulting in a healing of your scars and worries,” Phiri explains.

She advises the youth to focus on achieving their goals and finishing school. “It really should not matter where you come from or how your life is right now as that can never predict the outcome of your future. If you really want to succeed and are determined to have a bright future, you can through hard work, prayer and persistence. Nothing is impossible,” she concludes.
