Rural farmers from Bochum, Mapela, Tibane, Ga-Maja and elsewhere were very pleased to receive bags of grain seeds from Progress Milling during a ceremony at the mill in the city last Wednesday.
Progress Milling General Manager, Luke Bronkhorst said the 1 727 bags of seeds will benefit 981 farmers. “The seeds are packed in 5, 10 and 25 kg bags with one kilogram of seeds capable of yielding one hectare of grain. The seeds are donated to farmers that are not part of our regular producers and is distributed to be in time with the planting season that is about to start,” Bronkhorst explained.
Jean Simpungwe, Progress Milling Development Coordinator, added that the company recently launched a farmers’ development programme that will train them and provide information on best practices. “The seeds will be utilised by individual farmers, but we also engaged seven projects where farmers participate as a cooperative,” she said.
