137 learners admitted after drinking contaminated water

76 learners have since been discharged.

LIMPOPO – According to the Department of Health, 137 learners from Bosele School for the Blind have been admitted at St Ritas Hospital and Jane Furse Hospital, respectively, for observation.

“This follows learners complaining of stomach cramps and diarrhoea on suspicion of having consumed contaminated water,” says Thabiso Teffo, spokesperson for the Department of Health.

Teffo says the Department of Health and Education are working very closely to ensure that all the learners get proper assistance so that they return to school.

“Health professionals are hard at work and 76 learners have since been discharged. The remaining are expected to be discharged soon,” he added.

Upon interaction between the two MEC’s, the MEC for Education will be visiting the learners at both the hospitals and the school.

“We call on the parents of learners not to panic as the situation is under control,” Teffo concluded.
