Giyani village calm following service delivery protest
The community of Makoxa village in Giyani recently blocked and trashed streets in Section-D2 over a misunderstanding they had with the Greater Giyani Municipality.
LIMPOPO – The community of Makoxa village were set to meet with the Greater Giyani Municipality delegation, led by the newly appointed Municipal Manager, Maxwell Chauke, at Makoxa for an update on the progress made by the municipality relating to promises of a tarred road and water services made last year.
When the delegation did not show at the meeting, infuriated residents took to the streets in Section-D2, barricading them with burning debris and protesting.
Fortunately this was speedily resolved when the municipality explained to the residents they got held up at a briefing with the local chief.
When asked about this, Municipal Spokesperson, Steve Mavunda, told CV a municipal delegation had met with the village leaders at Makoxa village a day before the protest, and that the protest was as a result of a misunderstanding from that meeting.
“The municipal manager and his team were there to introduce a contractor a day before the community embarked on a protest. Unfortunately due to the unforeseen delay they couldn’t address the disgruntled residents about the progress regarding the tarring of the road,” Mavunda said.
He added the municipality managed calm down the situation with the introduction of a contractor to which will do paving on a 4,2 km road which connects the village to the main road that leads to Thomo village.
“The contractor is on site as we speak,” he said, adding the project was estimated to be completed in eight months.
