POLOKWANE – Since Monday we have been blessed with large amounts of rainfall and for farmers and garden enthusiasts this is welcomed with open arms. Rain is essential seeing as water is life but what do kids think about it. Moreover, what are their thoughts and fears regarding lightning, where it comes from, why it rains and who’s responsible for the thunder. Review ask Gr 2 learners of Pietersburg Comprehensive School what their thoughts were on this is:
“It always happen when it rains very hard I think it is the clouds that bump together that makes the sound, but I’m not sure. I like the rain because it gives us water.”
“The thunder makes one big spark and a very loud noise, and the spark wants to choke you, it will hurt you like a plug.”
“I think that big sound is a red dragon blowing out his breath. That lights up the clouds and make the spark.
“That is the sound of the big tap that opens. After it is opens the water comes out and then it rains, it is a very big tap with lots of water.”
“It always happen that the lightning goes twaaaaah and then it switches on the yellow light, that is dangerous, you must never touch it.”
“I like it when it rains because then people come to my house and I am not scared. Because if the thunder makes a flash I get scared.”
“The clouds light up when the thunder goes off, I don’t really like rain because then I can’t play outside.”
‘I think it comes from the rain, and it is the clouds that makes such a big noise. I get scared when it goes of and I run and hide under my blanket.”
“That loud sound comes from the sky and I think it is God that is making such a loud noise.”
“Thunder makes so much noise, like shooting a gun, and I get very scared especially if it is during bedtime.”
