Early Childhood Development Centre in progress

Another milestone in the history of Mitchell House was reached recently when the site for the school’s Early Childhood Development Centre (ECD), to be called ‘Squirrels’ Nest’, was officially handed over to the contractor, BDS Construction.
Mitchell House Director of Marketing, Achsah Phoshoko said that the ECD Centre, under the leadership of Head of Phase, Lee-Anne Petzer, aimed to provide a safe, happy and stimulating environment for every child by celebrating uniqueness, encouraging curiosity and assisting every child in fulfilling their potential.
“The ECD will follow the Independent Examinations Board’s Foundation Phase curriculum: ‘Learning through play’ to grow children’s’ social, emotional, physical and cognitive development,” Phoshoko explained.
According to Phoshoko, the philosophy of Squirrels’ Nest is based on the Reggio Emilia approach to ECD.
“The approach is rooted in the belief that children, no matter of their age, are natural learners. When given the proper supportive environment that encourages pursuit of their own interests, they will develop a love of learning that extends into adulthood. The Squirrels’ Nest ethos values every child and their individuality and provides a firm educational foundation for children to build upon throughout their childhood,” Phoshoko added.
“We anticipate to open the building in the third term and 2019 registration is open for children from the age of three years turning four in 2019 and for Grade 000 up to Grade 0; children aged five turning six in 2019,” Petzer, explained.
