Schools golf league kick-starts on a high note

It was a clash of clubs when golfers from six high schools in the province took to the greens in three separate High Schools Golf League divisions at the Polokwane Golf Club on Friday.
The league is divided into two regions, Northern and Southern, and has three divisions namely A, B and C. Hoërskool Pietersburg (PHS) competed against Hoër Tegniese Skool Tom Naudé and Stanford Lake College (SLC) while Curro Heuwel­kruin, Hoërskool Piet Potgieter and Hoërskool Ellisras locked horns.
According to PHS educator and golf organiser Lynn-Marié Combrink, this was the first round of the league and there were three more rounds to be played before the finals which are likely to take place somewhere in May.
She said all high schools that have golf on their sport calendar are part of the league, adding that Piet Potgieter High School is defending the title. PHS won 3-1 against Tom Naudé B and C-teams, SLC won 3-1 against PHS C-team, SLC won 4-0 against Tom Naudé C-team.
In a challenge between Curro Heuwelkruin and Piet Potgieter’s B-teams, Jan-Hendrik Nieuwoudt of Heuwelkruin walloped Michael McNicol 3-2 while Jandré van Niekerk and Johanco Welgemoed played to a 0-0 draw. Heinrich Laas of Heuwelkruin defeated HJ van der Nest with 1 point while Kaylen Deysel of Piet Potgieter beat Storm Keating 5-3. The overall score (Heuwelkruin 2-1 Piet Pot­gieter). In a competition between Heuwelkruin and Ellisras’ B-teams, Jan-Hendrik Nieuwoudt defeated Coenraad Pretorius 3-2 while Jandré van Niekerk and Jarred Grovers played to a 0-0 draw. Hendri Reyneck of Ellisras beat Heinrich Laas 4-3 while Storm Keating defeated Juen Farrel 7-5. The overall score was (Heuwelkruin 2-1 Ellisras).
