Rotten food on the menu at hospital in Modimolle

Patients admitted at the FH Odendaal Hospital in Modimolle in the Waterberg accused the hospital management of feeding them rotten and expired foodstuffs.

LIMPOPO – Patients said they are sometimes given milk or just pasta for the whole day and that is a serious problem as they have to take medication.

According to a patient who asked to remain anonymous, they have tried to raise the matter with some senior management at the hospital, but were told that there is no money to buy food as the budget has been exhausted.

The hospital was seemingly waiting for money to be transferred at the beginning April.

She said sometimes they would eat only a little porridge with milk while they will have to take medication consisting of many tablets, on a almost empty stomachs.

Patients at the hospital said they were transferred there from various hospitals throughout Limpopo as they are on Multiple Drug Resistance programme.

“Patients sometimes go to sleep without eating because they feared the rotten foodstuff will cause a stomach disorder,” she said. She explained that some patients feel it is better for them at home than to be cared for at this hospital.

The problem allegedly started in February this year but according to some patients neither the hospital or the department is doing anything about the matter.

Provincial Health Spokesperson, Thabiso Teffo said the department was not aware of the situation and he promised that they will investigate the matter and come up with a solution.
