[WATCH] Protests intensify in Mooketsi as rubber bullets are fired

Police say more public order policemen have been deployed to the area.

LIMPOPO – According to police spokesperson, Lt Col Moatshe Ngoepe, following yesterday’s violent protest in the area, residents began protesting this morning after the scene was cleared yesterday.

“Public Order Police (POP) are currently dispersing protesters and the road is now cleared for motorists.”

Additional POP have been deployed to the area and the situation is being monitored closely.

“Only one truck was burnt and there have been no other reported incidents of damage to property, injuries or fatalities at this stage,” he added.

Cases of malicious damage to property and public violence have been opened at the Modjadjiskloof Police Station, outside Tzaneen.

“No arrests have been made as yet but a special task team has been established to investigate and identified perpetrators will soon be arrested,” Ngoepe concluded.

The reason for the protest is still unknown.
