They explained their aim is to restore the dignity and respect of the elderly, especially elderly women, in the community. “When I first became involved with beauty pageants, I learned about the importance of giving back to the community. As a reigning queen, it was part of my duties to help those in need and show compassion for others. This experience motivated me to start Basadi Modern Movement. The organisation is about women coming together, working together and fighting against poverty and eliminating the mindset that only men can lead.”
She said they want to show the world women are also capable of doing whatever they put their minds to by joining forces and coming together.
“Nowadays the youth do not respect adults and this isn’t good nor healthy for the community. We as the youth want to lead by example, showing our peers we need to respect elders in our communities, whether you are related to them or not, as the Bible says we need to respect our elders, specifically our parents, to increase our chances of succeeding in life,” Shelly explained.
Basadi Modern Movement values and regards women as a crucial element in the journey to eradicate poverty. “In order for people to live in peace and harmony, women need to be respected and not belittled or seen as the weaker sex. Women are the key to eradicating poverty as they are the ones who can feed their children with knowledge from a tender age which will in turn help them to face life’s challenges head-on. Our mission as Basadi Modern Movement is to empower women and help make the community a better place to live in,” she concluded.
