Diarrhea cases on the increase, says MedPark Clinic

A local doctor working at the clinic explained that there is no specific treatment for people with adenovirus and that most of these infections are mild and may require only care to help relieve symptoms.

POLOKWANE- According to a recent report from Medpark Clinic, there have been an increased amount of diarrhea cases and body discomfort which can be traced back to the adenovirus.

According to a post on the clinic’s Facebook page, there are certain preventative measures that can be taken in order to minimize the chances of the disease spreading. Firstly, it is important to always ensure that you wash your hands after using the restroom and avoid physical contact with people that are sick.

The virus cannot be contracted via food water or anyway other than via physical contact, says a doctor at the clinic.

“When you sneeze put your hand in front of your mouth, and teachers also need to heed caution that the same washcloths are not used for all children but rather that each should have their own. Also keep all the towels clean and bathrooms efficiently sanitized so as to stop the virus from spreading. Also make sure that children thoroughly wash their hands on a regular basis.”

Review spoke with the owner of local pre-primary school who explained that with toddlers, it can be quite a mission of getting all the learners to wash their hands properly throughout the day.

“Children will be children and not always follow rules, however, we do place great emphasis on the importance of personal hygiene. We dedicate a whole month on the topic of hygiene and pair in into different weekly discussions as well as combining it with physical activities such as washing hands, brushing teeth, rinsing fruit and so forth.

The doctor ended off by saying that with the help of supportive medication, symptoms should subside and the patient will fully recover.
