Family and friends remember Wes Matthews

Mathews passed away on Wednesday, 2 May at the age of 88.

POLOKWANE – When the name Wes Matthews is mentioned, people who knew him can’t help but smile.

He was someone well-known for making people laugh and would without warning make a joke that would leave people with a smile for the rest of the day. His daughter, Careen, said he died last Wednesday at the age of 88.

Matthews was not just a well-known businessman as the owner of Roomes Electric, he was also well-known in golfing circles as he helped several players better their game with his training and guidance.

His three daughters remember their father as a man who supported them in everything they decided to do, no matter what it was.

“He knew a lot about everything and much of that was because he basically lived at the Polokwane Golf Club. He was even given a lifelong honourary president award by the club. He will be dearly missed but I know he had a full life,” Gail Matthews said.

Matthews was known to be set in his ways and a strong believer in principles, but a devoted husband and father.

He was married to his wife, Jeanette, for 61 years and leaves her, his three daughters, four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren behind. The Matthews family thanks everyone who stood by them in this time of sorrow.

The family held a small and intimate memorial service to honour him over the weekend.
