MEC for Transport & Community Safety in Limpopo, Makoma Makhurupetje will also launch a new dragger breathalyser machine

POLOKWANE – The MEC for Transport & Community Safety in Limpopo, Makoma Makhurupetje will lead festive season road safety campaign operations between the Kranskop Toll Plaza and Polokwane, this morning, 14 December.

As part of the campaign, the MEC will conduct inspection of the installation of gantries equipped with sophisticated camera and monitoring technology.

The system uses average-speed-over-distance (ASOD) technology that calculates the average speed of a vehicle, measured from the time it passes a camera, until it reaches a second camera at a fixed distance away. The gantries will be located between Kranskop and Polokwane.

The MEC, together with a special police task team, will also patrol hazardous spots on the N1 as part of an operation to deal with criminal activities on the highway.

In addition, the MEC will also launch the new dragger breathalyser machine. Unlike other breathalyser models, the device requires the individual being tested to blow into an inverted cone area, with results delivered immediately.

Throughout the festive season, law enforcement activities will include road safety activations, daily speed operations, daily road side checks, road blocks, moving violations, drunken driving operations, mobile vehicle testing and visible patrols.

“We declare Limpopo a zero-tolerance zone against law breakers. Any person caught speeding or breaking the rules of the road will be dealt with accordingly. Any bad driving should be reported to our Toll Free number: 0800 006694, or alternatively use 015 295 1022,” MEC Makhurupetje concluded.
