7 Nifty ways to turn old gifts into something new and funky
The holiday season means new gifts and in many cases it means having to make space or throw out items you don't use.
POLOKWANE – When it comes to old gifts that aren’t being used or taking up space, re purposing items may be the way to go.
Here are some ideas of things that you can makeover into something new:
1. A handy file organiser made from a dish rack:
Refurbish an unused dish rack to organize files on your desk in the office. Customise folders to match the color of the dish rack or just use a little spray paint to make it fit into the theme of your office
2. Transform sunglasses into a photo frame:
Don’t throw last year’s sunglasses away. Re-purpose them as photo frames. Put a strip of hot glue around the lenses to keep the picture from falling out. Next, attach the glasses with hot glue to a piece of scrapbook paper and then hot glue the paper to the back of the picture frame.
3. Create a Sewing Kit from an sunglasses case:
Turn your old sunglasses or spectacle case into a practical sewing repair kit. Cut fabric for the inside and outside of the case. For outer fabric, make sure that you have enough to cover the whole thing and tuck inside the case. For inner fabric, cut the edges with pinking shears to prevent fraying. Stick the fabric to the inside and outside of the case. Now add your needles and thread and there you go, a handy travel sewing kit.
5. Use Mascara brushes for cleaning:
When you finish a tube of mascara, it’s easier than you think to find a second use for the small brush. After a thorough cleaning, the brush has many uses. Use it to clean hard to reach areas like between the teeth of a comb for example.
6. Sew a cable knit sweater to make a pillow:
When you have sweaters that you can’t bear to let go of, why not re-purpose them into a pillow. Unravel some of the yarn from the sleeves and used a large plastic needle to hand stitch the holes closed. Fill up the material with pillow inner and close off the neck and there you have a pillow.
7. Turn a breadbox into a charging station
When there is no longer use for a breadbox in your kitchen, transform it into a charging station for all of your personal devices.
