The University of Limpopo (UL) on Monday began processing thousands of first entering students’ applications for admission to study in the 2019 academic year.
This is meant to finalise application status according to the applicants’ matric results.
In media statement released on Tuesday, acting registrar, Kwena Masha was quoted to have said that the university is working hard to assist students who applied during the formal application window from March to September in 2018.
Masha stressed that the long queues at the university are mostly formed by walk-in students trying to submit late applications as those who applied on time will receive feedback without having to queue to submit matric results as the university will access their results from the Department of Education.
“Starting from Wednesday, 9 January, applicants will receive SMSes informing them about the outcome of their applications,” Masha said.
Acting senior publications practitioner Johannes Selepe said the university had received over 55 000 direct applications and 10 000 from the central application system for 2019 academic year but can only admit 4 500 first-entering students. “Currently we are only assisting late applicants who achieved level 4 and above in Mathematics and are interested in the sciences and accounting as in those programmes we normally do not meet the quotas.
“Late applications will start on 17 January provided there is space available. Registration for first year students will be done from 14 to 17 January and registration for all students living with disabilities on 10 January,” Selepe informed.
