Licence backlog is being dealt with, says Transport Dept
In a statement released by the Transport Department, a directive was issued to traffic authorities not to penalise those who've complied with the prescripts of their renewal applications.
POLOKWANE – Transport Spokesperson, Ishmael Mnisi said they are working day in and out to ensure that they cover the backlog within the stipulated three weeks that they give customers, but it has been a challenge with new applications coming in daily.
This comes in view of the national backlog in vehicle driver licences.

“So far we have done well with applications that we received from August, September, and October, but we will soon give an update for applicants who applied after that,” he said.
A 65-year-old woman said she found the follow-up process laborious. She renewed her licence on 21 November and went to check the progress in late December only to be told her licence was not ready yet.
She returned in the first week of January but was told to return in another two weeks. She does not have money for a temporary licence and each time, she has to pay transport costs.

Included among those were people who renewed their licences three months before it had expired, and new applicants who applied for temporary licences. Those who applied after their licences had expired, must by law obtain temporary licences, the directive states.
