Man (52) sentenced for failing to declare money at border post

Rory John Hamisa Logan was sentenced to five years imprisonment for contraventions of the Control Exchange Regulations and additional five years for fraud, with an option of R250 000 fine for each ruling

LIMPOPO – Rory John Hamisa Logan (52), was on Monday convicted for failing to declare all the money he had in his possession at the border post by Lephalale Regional Court, the Hawks confirmed on Thursday.

Hawks Spokesperson, Capt Matimba Maluleke, said Logan who was on his way to Botswana when he was arrested at the Groblersbrug border post on 20 November 2018.

“This after after he failed to declare almost R600 000 that was hidden in his vehicle. He had only declared a paltry R40 000 at the check point when a subsequent search of the vehicle exposed the rest of the money that was stashed in the vehicle,” Maluleke explained.

The Hawks’ Serious Commercial Crime Investigation unit was entrusted with the investigation and Logan was charged for contravening the Control Exchange Regulations and for being in the Republic of South Africa illegally.

The court has warned Logan for contravening Immigration Act and sentenced him to five years imprisonment for contraventions of the Control Exchange Regulations and additional five years for fraud, with an option of R250 000 fine for each ruling. The sentences have been ordered to run concurrently.

The confiscated money has been forfeited to the state, Maluleke concluded.
