Four children burned to death in shack fire in Mookgophong

LIMPOPO – The Mookgophong Police have opened an inquest following the death of four children during a shack fire at Extension 02 in Mookgophong.The incident occurred in the early hours of this morning (Sunday) after the four children, aged between five and 14-years-old, were allegedly left at home alone overnight.
Police spokesperson, Col Moatshe Ngoepe said it is alleged the mother left her four children sleeping in their shack while she went next door to attend a church service.
“At around 03:05 this morning the mother noticed flames licking the top of the shack where these children were sleeping and immediately screamed for help. Three of the children had already died and a fourth was rescued and taken to the hospital for medicial treatment. The child was later certified dead,” Ngoepe added.
The deceased were identified as follows : Mohau Gift Mabela (5), Mahlatsi Thomas Mabela (11), Junior Marcus Nkuna (14) and Mpho Gift Nkuna (9).
The cause of fire in this incident is still unknown at this stage but the forensic investigations will tell, Ngoepe said.

The Provincial Commissioner of the South African Police Service in Limpopo Lieutenant General Nneke Ledwaba has learned of this horrible incident with shock and dismay. The General has assured the family members that the Police will leave no stone unturned in this matter but he called on members of the community in the area to remain calm and allow the Police investigations to unfold unhindered.
The Police investigations are still continuing.
