Six ATM bombing suspects arrested in the Dennilton policing area

Preliminary police investigations revealed that three of the suspects were out on bail, having previously committed similar offences.

LIMPOPO – Provincial Commissioner of the South African Police Service in Limpopo, Lieutenant General Nneke Ledwaba has expressed his delight following the arrest of six suspects in connection with ATM bombings in the Dennilton policing area, outside Groblesdal.

According to police spokesperson, Col Moatshe Ngoepe, police were notified after the incidents occurred and put a 72 hour activation plan into place which resulted in the initial arrest of six suspects between the ages of 24 and 39-years-old.

“A group of heavily armed suspects stormed into a supermarket at a local shopping mall in the Dennilton policing area on 1 April. The suspects threatened cashiers and customers before bombing an ATM and fled the scene after taking an undisclosed amount of money. During the manhunt, one of the vehicles used by the suspects was later found abandoned a few kilometers from the crime scene,” Ngoepe explained in a statement.

The operation continued and the suspects were arrested in different locations in Masemola, Zebediela, Marble Hall and Matlerekeng. During the arrest, two firearms, 19 rounds of ammunition, explosives, burnt cash canisters and an Isuzu KB double cab were recovered.

“Preliminary police investigations revealed that three of the suspects were out on bail, having previously committed similar offenses. The origin of the recovered items will be determined by ongoing police investigations,” he said.

The suspects will appear before different Magistrate’s Courts, soon.
