Two patients killed after car skips traffic light in the Polokwane CBD

MEC Dr Phophi Ramathuba has expressed her sadness over the news of the death of two patients in a motor vehicle accident involving an ambulance they were travelling in over the weekend.

POLOKWANE – Two patients were killed and Emergency Services crew critically injured during a motor vehicle accident in the Polokwane CBD over the weekend, reports the Limpopo Department of Health.

A statement by the department reports that two patients were being transported from the Lebowakgomo Hospital to the Polokwane Provincial Hospital when the ambulance collided with a vehicle that was allegedly travelling at a high speed and failed to stop at a traffic light. 

One patient was killed on impact, leaving one patient and the EMS crew critically injured. The second patient later died in hospital, said department spokesperson, Neil Shikwambana.

“As a department, we are saddened by the fact that these patients met their untimely death while en-route to receive treatment in order to improve their state of personal health. We want to send our heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased and wish speedy recovery to the those who sustained injuries during the accident,” concluded Dr Ramathuba.

Review is currently awaiting more information on the matter from the spokesperson for the Department of Transport, Matome Moremi-Taueatsoala.
