Thirteen persons, all believed to be from Zimbabwe, died in an accident on the N1 when the bus they were travelling in overturned just after Louis Trichardt on Monday.
Departmental spokesperson Matome Moremi-Taueatsoala indicated that the bus driver allegedly lost control causing the bus to overturn instantly killing 13 persons while a further 13 were transported to nearby hospitals for medical treatment.
According to a press release issued, Transport and Community Safety MEC, Makoma Makhurupetje extended her condolences to the families of the deceased and wished the injured a speedy recovery.
“We are deeply concerned about accidents involving buses as they lead to more loss of lives compared to ordinary motor vehicles.
The driver and vehicle fitness of long distance cross border buses is also a matter of deep concern to us as this is the third time that we are losing lives because of long distance buses.
It is about time that our law enforcement officers step up their routine checks on these buses to prevent such accidents from happening” Makhurupetje was quoted to have said.
At this stage no conclusive evidence has been found pointing to the exact cause of the accident although reckless driving was not ruled out as the possible cause, according to Moremi-Taueatsoala.
