A 54-year-old man and his 18-year-old son are expected to appear in the Bolobedu Magistrate’s Court this morning (Thursday) following the death of a 14-year-old learner as result of an incident at Ga-Mothupa village on Tuesday.
Provincial Police Spokesperson Moatshe Ngoepe indicated that the 18-year-old, also a learner, allegedly drove a Nissan bakkie without a driver’s licence while his father was a passenger in the vehicle. The incident happened at about 11:00 when the driver reportedly lost control and plunged into a group of learners in front of Mothlatlego Machaba Scondary School.
Ngoepe stated that emergency services were called and the injured learners were taken to nearby hospitals for treatment. Upon arrival at the hospital Koketso Raholane, 14, unfortunately succumbed to his injuries. He confrmed that the other learners were recuperating at their respective homes.
The driver is facing charges of culpable homicide, driving an unroadworthy motor vehicle and driving a motor vehicle without a valid driver’s licence. His father, the owner of the vehicle, will be charged on account of permitting a person to drive a motor vehicle knowing that he was not in possession of a valid driver’s licence.
