One dead, 3 arrested following Burgersfort armed robbery

One man was fatally wounded and three others arrested following a shoot-out with the police outside Burgersfort on Monday, 8 July.

LIMPOPO – This, after the police tracked a group of armed suspects who targeted a shopping complex in the central business district earlier the day.

In a statement released, Police Spokesperson, Col Moatshe Ngoepe said the men were arrested during a sting tactical intelligence joint operation, comprising the operational teams from Limpopo and Mpumalanga, the Limpopo Provincial Tracking Team, Limpopo Provincial Intervention Unit and the Burgersfort K9 Unit.

“The team cornered the criminals along the road soon after they robbed one of the local stores, of an undisclosed amount. The police managed to stop the suspects on the road near ga-Masha village, but they resisted and started shooting at the police who retaliated. During the incident, one of the men was fatally wounded, three were arrested and a vehicle, two firearms and a bag containing cash were recovered,” Ngoepe said.

The identity of the deceased, the origin of all the recovered items will still be determined by the ongoing police investigations.

The three suspects, aged between 25 and 31, will appear before the Sekhukhune Magistrate’s Court on charges of murder, business robbery, possession of prohibited firearms and ammunition and possession of suspects stolen properties. Further investigation will possible link these suspects to other criminal activities committed in the province, Ngoepe adds.

The Provincial Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Nneke Ledwaba  has warned criminals who still continue with their dubious acts that they will face the full might of the law. He further encouraged the public to continue supporting the police in their endeavour to fight crime.
