Two suspects, respectively 30 and 40 years of age, were expected to appear in the Musina Magistrate’s Court earlier this week after were arrested at the Beit Bridge border post on Saturday for alleged possession of suspected stolen cell phone tower batteries.
According to Maphure Manamela of the Provincial Police Communications Centre the two suspects were intercepted during routine stop and search procedures at the border post.
She said Police pulled a Nissan Hardbody bakkie and trailer off the road and subsequently found eight Vodacom tower batteries hidden in the trailer. The driver and his companion were arrested on the spot, according to Manamela.
She indicated that the two suspects were making their way out of the country when they were arrested. The origin and destination of the batteries are still being investigated.
