Most South African women who commit crimes such as murder do so as result of anger and failure to control their emotions. This was recently revealed by Chief Operations Commissioner Correctional Services Mandla Mkabela when addressing female offenders and community members during Women’s Day celebrations held at the department’s Polokwane Correctional Centre.
Mkabela urged attendees to always keep their emotions at bay and never allow them to influence their actions.

He said many female offenders serving sentences for murder or economic crimes were unable to control their emotions at the time of committing the crime. “Some of them could have avoided correctional facilities if they were able to manage their emotions. Most of them find themselves in situations they cannot rectify because they failed to control their emotions. They need to understand that if they are angry or upset they can assault anyone. We need people to become emotionally intelligent because if they do, they will be able to understand the origin of their own emotions. People who can control their emotions will thrive,” Mkabela remarked.
Female inmates had the opportunity to exhibit handicraft and other items made by them. They also performed various cultural and praise songs to the delight and appreciation of the large audience.
