Police have opened an inquest docket after the death of two toddlers who allegedly burnt to death inside a shack at Magau village near Makhado area on Monday.
Provincial Police Spokesperson Moatshe Ngoepe said the toddlers were identified as Tshilidzi Blessing Mulamu (3) and Tshinakaho Mulaudzi (2).
He indicated that Police received a call about a shack on fire and responded quickly. Emergency services were also dispatched and when they arrived on the scene the shack was engulfed in flames.
When the fire was extinguished the two toddlers were found inside, burnt beyond recognition, according to Ngoepe.
He added that the father of the children was found at the scene and explained that he and his wife allegedly went to a nearby bush to collect firewood, leaving his two children in the shack. According to him they were only away for several minutes when someone called him to say that his house is on fire, Ngoepe reiterated.
The cause of the fire is still being investigated.
Provincial Police Commissioner Nneke Ledwaba has condemned the unaccepted behaviour by some parents leaving children unattended at home. He, however, extended his condolences to the family for the unforeseen circumstance of losing the two toddlers.
