Relentless efforts by the Police to curb illegal mining in the province resulted in the arrest of two suspects in connection with alleged illegal mining of chrome in the Mecklenburg area on the weekend.
Provincial Police Spokesperson Moatshe Ngoepe indicated that the two suspects, aged 34 and 54, were expected to appear in the Mecklenburg Magistrate’s Court earlier this week.
He said the duo were arrested during a concerted operation comprising of the Provincial Organised Crime Unit and local mine security guards.
Ngoepe said the Police followed up on information received from community members at Tjibeng Village which led them to a mine where two suspects were allegedly caught red-handed and arrested on the spot.
During the arrest Police confiscated a truck loaded with chrome, according to Ngoepe.
Provincial Police Commissioner Nneke Ledwaba has warned those continuing with similar criminal activities that the Police will deal with them harshly and without compromise.
