ANCYL Peter Mokaba calls the Mankweng demolitions and embarrassment to governing party

ANCYL Peter Mokaba branch is shocked by the Polokwane Municipality’s lackadaisical attitude in the demolition of houses in Mankweng

POLOKWANE – The ANCYL Peter Mokaba branch has called the recent demolition of property in Mankweng an act of ‘self sabotage’ by the leadership of the municipal council.

This after the Polokwane Municipality demolished properties built ‘illegally’ on a piece of land which is a subject of contest between the municipality and the Traditional Authority.

This land belongs to the poor people, who had reportedly obtained documents to occupy the land from the Traditional Authorities and we believe the municipality should have provided leadership on the matter in order to present the ANC as a leading and caring government, said the youth wing in a statement on Friday, 8 November.

Housing remains one of the government biggest challenges, therefor anyone who has the means to do so on their own, without assistance from government, should be ‘appreciated’. This government cannot be seen stripping people of the ‘right to shelter’.

The saddest part of this incident, is that the victims have not been provided with alternative accommodation. According to the ‘Law of the Joinder’ and Section 26 of the Constitution, the affected individuals should be provided with alternative accommodation, instead of being rendered homeless. This can only be viewed as a lack of leadership on the part of the municipality, reads the statement.

They further called the selective justice inhumane as this action only targeted the poor, where as there are numerous cases of proven illegal occupations in Mankweng, ‘by the rich and famous’, who had been spared the same fate.
