Mayoral Golf Day raises R1.2m for student bursaries

The sixth annual Mayoral Golf Day in Polokwane raised R1.2 million towards student bursaries, supporting tuition, accommodation and books.

POLOKWANE – The sixth annual Mayoral Golf Day was once again a day filled with fun, laughter, a bit of competition and a lot of networking.

This year, the Mayoral Golf Day took place on October 2 at the Polokwane Golf Course, with 120 players participating.

The day was opened in the traditional manner with Acting Mayor Joosef Pemma taking the first shot.

A first for the year was the shotgun start, while the format for the day was individual stableford.

Where the money goes

According to municipal spokesperson Willy Mosoma, the proceeds will go towards needy and deserving students within the Polokwane area.

Sarel Nong, MC of the Mayoral Golf Day, welcomes the players.

“The financial assistance supports essential educational costs, including tuition, accommodation and books. The initiative is also deliberately aligned with the development of critical skills, particularly in areas such as accounting and engineering, with a focus on fields relevant to municipal service delivery, including water, electricity and waste management.”

R1.2m raised against R1.5m target

The day raised approximately R1.2 million against a target of R1.5 million.

“While the R1.2 million raised is below the R1.5 million target, it represents a significant contribution towards helping deserving students pursue their education and develop skills that will contribute to the future of Polokwane.

“At its heart, the Mayoral Charity Golf Day is about turning a day on the golf course into an investment in the future of young people.

“The municipality appreciates the sponsors, partners and participants whose support continues to make this possible.”

Baldwin Ramasobane and Joe Legora are ready to start the day.

Maretha Swanepoel

My name is Maretha Swanepoel and I have worked at the Polokwane Review since 2012. The decision to become a journalist came at 04:00 one Friday morning while watching news of bombings in Afghanistan and I realised I wanted to be there. Some years later, I decided to rather stay in South Africa and join the industry due to my love for writing and curiosity. Even though I can write all beats, I love human interest and community news with some schools added to the mix. Telling someone’s story and using my camera to make memories is a privilege. My interests include animals (especially dogs) and mental health. I like to spend my time with my dogs and a good book. My family is important and takes second place in my heart. God is always first.
