Officials from Kenya’s Department of Social Welfare spent two days in Limpopo to learn some of the best practices in dealing with social welfare and social security.
The bilateral study tour group arrived at the Department of Social Development’s headquarters last Thursday and proceeded to poverty alleviation projects situated in the Capricorn District such as Ngwana Baby House, the South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) Seshego offices and the provincial food distribution centre in Zone 3, Seshego. It was learnt that the group consisted of representatives of the United Nations Children’s Fund Kenya and South Africa as well as Sassa officials in Limpopo.
Social Development MEC Nkakareng Rakgoale reportedly said the department has a lot to offer as government has sound social security and welfare policies in place. Kenya is currently compiling policies to guide them in terms of dealing with issues of children and poverty, she added. Rakgoale further stated that South Africa should also assess whether policies relating to people with disabilities are enforced and stressed that policies should not gather dust but be implemented.
Head of the Kenyan delegation Ebrahim Salim reportedly said they were delighted to be hosted by the province as they will get to learn and share best practices with the South African Government.
