Brain food for kids: Stimulate your child’s brain with these super foods
The foods we eat plays a huge role and can have a big impact on the structure and health of our brains, especially when it comes to children.
POLOKWANE – This is according to local dietitian, Kulani Mtileni who shared some food ideas with us. “The brain is an energy-intensive organ and uses around 20% of the body’s calories. Following a diet which boosts the brain can support both short- and long-term brain function,” Kulani added.
He said that the brain needs plenty of good fuel to maintain concentration throughout the day.
“Everyone must know that the brain also requires certain nutrients to stay healthy. Foods which are rich in omega-3 fatty acids such as salmon, tuna, and sardines helps builds and repairs brain cells. Antioxidants reduce cellular stress and inflammation, which are linked to brain ageing and neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer’s disease,” Kulani said.
He explained that such foods will help stimulate the child’s brain during the holiday, and when they go back to school – they are fully refreshed and ready for class.
Kulani added that oily fish is a good source of omega-3 fatty acids. “Omega 3 helps to build membranes around each cell in the body. This includes the brain cells which can therefore improve the structure of brain cells called neurons,” he added.
He further explained that foods such as dark chocolate and a variety of berries contain flavonoid antioxidants which are very good for the brain.
“Berries such as strawberries, blackberries, blueberries, blackcurrants and mulberries are good for the brain,” he said.
He concluded by saying that nuts such as sunflower seeds, almonds and hazelnuts also stimulate the brain.
“Try making these types of foods for your children at home or even when they go back to school after the holiday. Try including some of these ingredients in their lunch boxes and you will definitely see the difference in their school work or even the words they use,” he concluded.
