Illegal mining operation stopped in it’s tracks
Mining equipment worth an estimated R6 million was seized by the police in the early hours of this morning
LIMPOPO – Nine people were arrested and mining equipment worth millions confiscated during a police operation conducted in the Apel policing area in the early hours of this morning.
Police followed up on information received and a team, comprised of members from the Provincial Organised Crime Unit, was assembled.
The information led the team to a mine near Atok where they managed to arrest nine suspects on charges of illegal mining and seized four excavators, two LDVs and a sedan at around 04:00, says Police Spokesperson, Brig Motlafela Mojapelo.
The confiscated items are worth an estimated R6 million.
All the arrested suspects, aged between 21 and 55, are expected to appear in the Lebowakgomo Magstrate’s Court soon.
Provincial Police Commissioner, Lt Genl Nneke Ledwaba commended the members for their their sterling investigations which led to the arrest of the accused.
