Full STEAM ahead for Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics
STEAM is aimed at equipping young people with skills and knowledge to become scientists, engineers and innovators.
POLOKWANE – The STEAM (Science Technology Engineering Arts Mathematics) Ambassador’s Club is about giving children exposure to science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics fields by going to industries to learn about the various careers on offer in the world of STEAM.
Pearl Sekwati, founder of STEAM, says the programme involves robotics, programming, coding, hands-on science experiments and having art workshops. She says the plan is to eventually enter the learners into local and international science and technology competitions.

She says STEAM is aimed at equipping young people with skills and knowledge to become scientists, engineers and innovators. “I want to increase the attainment of STEAM subjects and the members of the club will want to become innovators, engineers and scientist who will develop innovative products that will solve our problems.”
She says one of the main aims is to raise awareness of STEAM subjects which play a major role in the Fourth Industrial Revolution and also to keep the young people out of the streets. She says the target market is children between the age of eight and 16.
“We need a place where we can make it our STEAM centre, whereby the youth can access it on a daily basis.” She says they currently meet on Saturdays at the Capricorn District Municipality’s function room in Polokwane. “We are still looking for a suitable location for our club.”
She says they also need resources such as computers, internet for coding and research, furniture (tables and chairs), cupboards as well as science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics related books.
