Police have registered an inquest docket after lions allegedly killed a 21-year-old woman at a private game reserve outside Bela-Bela last Thursday.
Provincial Police Spokesperson Moatshe Ngoepe indicated that Swané van Wyk was reportedly performing her duties in the cage with the lions attacked and killed her.
Police and emergency medical services were summoned and found the woman outside one of the cages and noticed that she had sustained severe injuries. She was certified dead by paramedics on the scene.
The circumstances leading to the incident are still unknown and investigations continue, according to Ngoepe.
Police cautioned members of the community to always remain alert whenever they are in the areas where these type of animals are kept to prevent similar incidents from happening.
