Father’s Day meal fit for a king
A local chef has compiled a meal perfect for this Father’s Day
POLOKWANE – Father’s Day is all about spoiling the number one man in your life and Review spoke to local chef, Mahlako Sebati, on making the perfect Father’s Day meal.
Mahlako, who has been in the industry for the past six years says this specific Father’s Day meal is special to her because her late father loved African cuisine.
“As my father is already deceased, making this means I get an opportunity to help other people make their fathers happy. It brings me great joy to use a memory to make other fathers happy.” Since 2007, she has been cooking the meal he loved most for her clients as a Father’s Day special.
Mahlako’s meal consists of tea and scones. She says that the scones are easy to make and quite filling. “These are bound to keep any father filled, as breakfast is the most important meal of the day. The scones can be paired with either juice or tea but this weather calls for a steaming cup of tea.”
Mahloko’s scone recipe:
6 cups of flour
250g margarine
6 tsp of baking powder
½ cup of sugar
125ml of Nespray
Combine ingredients with 500ml of water until it’s all mixed together. If the mixture is too dry, keep adding water till a fluffy dough forms.
Cut out dough and place on greased baking tray.
Bake at 180 degrees for 20 minutes
For lunch, Mahlako has named a feast fit for a king. Firstly, have wings as a starter before the main course. “These barbeque and lemon wings are the perfect starter to ensure your taste buds are in check. The lemons help prepare one for a heavy meal.”
Mahloko’s wing recipe:
15 ml salt and pepper
15 ml dried pepper
3 tbs chutney
½ cup of lemon juice
½ cup sugar
10 ml paprika
1 chicken stock cube
250ml water
Boil the chicken wings in the stock, drain and put aside.
Add all dry ingredients together in a pot and cook on medium heat until thick.
Add the wings and cook for seven minutes.
For the main course she has made white samp, seasoned with parsley, that can be enjoyed either hot or cold. This is served with hard body chicken, chakalaka, grilled lamb and spinach with tomato.
