Teacher: ‘Focus on academics, purpose in life’

Taxila Secondary School teacher Regina Magolo says children should remain focused on their academics, even during the holidays. Here's how she suggests you keep them busy:

POLOKWANE – Taxila Secondary School teacher Regina Magolo says it is important to keep children away from the streets and focused on their lives and their academics during holidays.

“When a child is focused on their academics it is easy for them to find purpose for their lives. Their confidence is also boosted because the more they focus, the more they excel and when you excel your confidence is boosted.”

She says when learners become more focused it makes the job of a teacher easier. She adds that when learners realise they can achieve anything they put their mind to, the goal or vision they have for their life also increases.

“It is the responsibility of parents to observe the growth of their learners. Once the parents realise their children’s strengths and talents, they are able to enrol them into the right programmes and activities that will nurture their talents. These should not only be academic activities but also skills development or any cultural or sport talents. It can even be a hobby that a child has.”

She says holidays are the perfect time to enrol a learner who struggles with math into extra lessons, or a child who wants to learn soccer into a soccer camp.

“This time can be used to explore the interests of the child, whatever they may be. It is important for children to rest during holidays but you don’t want them idling around the house with nothing to do. Playing games at home have academic benefits and will also improve the relationship between learners and parents. Educational games such as chess and Scrabble will help the learners with mathematics, coordination or even spelling and writing. Some outdoor games like skipping will help increase the activity levels for the learners and help them sleep better at night,” she says and adds that an hour or two of educational activities will keep their minds stimulated during the holidays.
