Bleeding for a good cause

The South African National Blood Service (SANBS) urges people to continue donating blood.

The need for blood continues to exist despite the uncertainty of the times that we are in. Review spoke to Bethuel Mokonyane, the collections manager, who explained that there is a need for donations and the number of donors dependent on where the SANBS recruits on any specific day. “It depends on the place and the regulations that are in place. Some malls allow us but it is solely dependent on the measures that they have in place at that particular mall,” he said.

He further explained when planning recruitment, they also look at the trends of that particular area; for example, in Limpopo majority of recruitments happen on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday whereas Friday, Saturday and Sunday see a decline.

Schools are also a boost for donations because of the blood drives that they host. Mokonyane shared that they would be approaching schools to continue with blood drives under cautious conditions and strict Covid-19 regulation adherence.

The SANBS will continue with national campaigns and sending out messages to people inviting them to donate at their nearest drive. Mokonyane also encouraged people to donate at their nearest donor centres which are readily available during the operating hours on Monday to Saturday. Visit www.sanbs.org.za for more information.
