Humphrey visualises his dream and makes it a reality
20-Year-old, Humphrey Makwela dreams of becoming a renowned fine artist in the future
POLOKWANE – 20-Year-old, Humphrey Makwela says fine art requires patience and focus as portraits take time to draw. The Moremadi Park resident says he dreams of becoming a renowned fine artist in the future and looks up to artists such as TallBoi and Martin Sefako.
Humphrey recently matriculated and told BONUS that he began drawing at the age of five. “My first drawing was of a car and at the time, my preschool teacher was amazed at how precise my drawing was. From a young age, I was able to draw anything you put in front of me, from animals to houses and trees,” he explained.
Humphrey says he moved on to drawing portraits as he got older and would scout for portrait artists on social media to observe how it is done.
“I watched YouTube videos and would practice along with the artist,” he said.
He explained that each portrait requires a special leaded pencil to make it look as realistic as possible, adding that softer lead pencils are darker than hard lead pencils. “Each pencil can be used to draw different parts depending on the shade needed.”
Aside from pencils, Humphrey also uses ink, paint, graphite and blending sticks as well as coloured pencils and pens. “Drawing gives me great satisfaction. It helps me relax on stressful days and I need to be in a quiet and relaxed environment to be able to draw precisely.”
Humphrey says his dream is to one day exhibit his art for exposure and be known as Mankweng’s most popular visual artist.
