Alex finds the perfect blend of art and academics

Alexander Mengistu found the perfect blend of art and academics.

POLOKWANE – The Gr 12 learner of Flora Park Comprehensive High School is the top learner in business studies for the first term and is overall doing exceptionally well academically.

Alexander has ambitions of studying law.

The multifaceted learner is a musician in his free time and likes the rap genre. He goes by the stage name ‘Alex’ as he is struggling to come up with any other name that he feels will identify with him and the music he makes.

The first song he recorded was called Crime and relates to socio-economic impact of the actions of young people.

“I tried to highlight how young people turn to crime just for reasons of popularity,” he explained.

Being in Gr 12 many things have had to take the back seat, including music, as he is adamant that his academics come first.

“Success is a comfortable position and you have to put yourself in that position to get what you want. I do not really mind sacrificing my school holiday and social life to achieve my dreams.”

He does, however, wish to pursue music at a later stage and has his degree to show that it is possible to pursue your passion and still have something concrete to fall back on.

“I am learning from other people and I have seen that if you focus only on one thing, there is a balance mismatch. I want to show and learn that it is possible to have an interest and attention on both,” he said.

He added that his strategy to get through the rest of the year is to keep trying and not give up.
