POLOKWANE – Geography according to Google is the study of places and the relationships between people and their environments. A person who seems to be a boffin in the field is Kgotso Shilabye.

Kgotso is a 17-year-old who recently obtained first place in the province in the fifth annual online geography Olympiad held by the South African National Geography Olympiad (Sango).

The Gr 11 learner at Flora Park Comprehensive High School managed to achieve this feat as he competed against 2 575 learners from 149 schools.

The initial online test took place on May 18. The second round was a written task where he had to submit a research project that was also visually appealing.

“I had to do research on drought and the impact it has on the world. I discovered that there are different types of droughts, as it is not a universal term,” he explained.

Kgotso shared that he learned a lot from doing the research, which made it interesting and the support he received from his teachers has been outstanding.

He took part in the Olympiad without the expectation of doing as well as he did, especially because geography is not at the top of the list of his favourite subjects.

“I enjoy doing research on science but the things I am interested in are not in our syllabus. I like to read up on producing energy and matter,” he added.

Kgotso shared that his teachers tell him that he has the potential to do extremely well if he focuses on subjects that are in the school syllabus.

“I am grateful to my teachers who have been supportive and contributed greatly towards my achievement,” he concluded.
