Cappies debaters win national top spot in SAASTA contest

Debaters of Capricorn High School are in the number one spot in the country.

POLOKWANE – This after they participated in the South African Agency for Science and Technology Advancement (Saasta) schools debate competition.

The debate team won the national competition and are currently the reigning champions.

The school’s debate head coach Kgantshi Mathekga explained that the debate is largely centered around issues of science. In the national competition the motion was ‘Covid-19’ and they represented the economic perspective in the debate, which they subsequently won.

“It took us a week to figure out the motion and we met online every day. We did a lot of research on what other countries are doing to deal with the pandemic from an economic perspective.

“We borrowed where we could and where we couldn’t we were innovative with our ideas,” he explained.

Mathekga shared that winning the national competition was a sweet victory as others might have underrated the Limpopo team.

He commended the team for their dedication and hard work to get to where they are.
