POLOKWANE – Kgaogelo is a Capricorn High School learner who was part of the children’s conference that took place from September 19-21. It took place in Billund, a city also known as the Capital of Children. The conference brings children together from across the world to gather under one roof and discuss critical issues that affect children.
Kgaogelo applied to be part of the conference because of her passion for advocating for children’s rights. This was an opportunity to highlight the issues that are faced by South African children. She had the support of the Nelson Mandela’s Children’s Fund throughout the process to get her to the conference and she is happy about for the recognition she received. “The experience was surreal and unlike anything that I have ever done,” she said.
She used the platform to highlight the digital divide in South Africa. According to her, there’s a gap in education for children in underprivileged communities as the world moves into the fourth industrial revolution. “I’m glad I got the opportunity to educate people from other countries about this crisis happening in our country. Many of the people I interacted with weren’t aware that things are as bad as they are here,” she said.
She describes herself as a born leader and this might be because she is relatable and her ability to take initiative. She is not afraid to make decisions and she firmly stands for what she believes in. Kgaogelo added that the lessons she has taken away from the experience are invaluable and she will take them with her for the rest of her life.
