Northern Academy’s chess team qualifies for SAs

The learners qualified for the national event after they won the Capricorn district leg in October.

POLOKWANE – Northern Academy’s chess team will participate in the South African Junior Chess Championship scheduled for January 2-7, 2022 in Boksburg.

The learners qualified for the national event after they won the Capricorn district leg in October. The players are Kamogelo Maubane, Molepo Malema, Blessing Komana, Bokamosa Maraba, Comfort Rachoene, Mokgokong Setumo and Reabetswe Moraba. Thapelo Makgoba, chess coach at the school, said the team stand a good chance to win the gold medal at the national event.

“We have a good, dedicated team capable of winning any chess event.

They proved themselves in local events and we have no doubt they will make us proud.”

He also encouraged more learners at the school to participate in chess.

“Chess helps children with cognitive development, discipline, solving problems, analysing and being creative. It will be good to have more learners in our chess team.”
