By speaking up and reporting suspected wrongdoing, you can help make a difference in SA. By following the guidelines in this article, you can anonymously report any wrongdoing you have witnessed or experienced to the Special Investigating Unit (SIU).
About the unit
Striking against corruption for 29 years. The SIU is an independent statutory body that investigates serious allegations of corruption, fraud, malfeasance and maladministration involving government departments, municipalities, state-owned entities, public assets and public money.
Established in 1997, the SIU also takes civil action to correct wrongdoing and recover financial losses suffered by the State.
The SIU is stronger with you
Corruption affects every South African, and reporting it is one way the public can help protect public resources and hold those responsible accountable. You can choose to remain anonymous when reporting suspected corruption.
If you have witnessed or experienced suspected corruption, fraud, malfeasance or maladministration involving a government department, municipality or state entity, reporting it could help uncover wrongdoing. Here is what you need to know before blowing the whistle and what information you should provide when reporting a matter to the SIU.
Reporting guidelines
Here are guidelines on what you need to provide when reporting corruption, fraud, malfeasance, and maladministration.
Allegations:
- What are the allegations about? Examples: Tender fraud, irregular procurement, corruption, collusion, or fronting.
- What happened?
- How did it happen?
- When and where did it happen?
- Who was involved /
- who is implicated?
- Who did what?
- How much money was involved?
- What is the result of what happened? Examples: Loss suffered by the state institution, irregular expenditure, or failure of a project.
Supporting documents:
- Tender committee
- Report/submissions
- Appointment letter (if available)
- Investigation or audit reports
- Correspondents (letters, emails, or minutes)
- Payment information
SIU hotline
Ready to blow the whistle against corruption? Report suspected corruption, fraud, malfeasance or maladministration to the SIU by emailing info@siu.co.za, or calling the toll-free SIU Hotline on 0800 037 774. You can also choose to remain anonymous. The SIU will protect whistleblowers.
