Arrest made after fatal stabbing near Flora Park voting station

Police say a 31-year-old man was fatally stabbed in a park opposite Flora Park Comprehensive School, while the EFF says it is working to confirm whether the victim was one of its members.

POLOKWANE – The EFF’s member of the mayoral campaign team in Limpopo, Mashapa Malema, says the party is still trying to confirm the identity of the man who was stabbed to death in Flora Park on Thursday morning.

EFF seeks to identify victim

Malema told the Review Online that the party had been informed of the stabbing and that the victim was wearing an EFF T-shirt. He said people at the scene had indicated that the man was a known EFF member.

“We are still trying to track the identity of the person,” Malema said.

Suspect arrested

A 35-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the murder of the 31-year-old victim.

According to Limpopo police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba, the stabbing occurred at about 05:00 in a park opposite Flora Park Comprehensive School.

Police said the victim was among a group of people gathered at the park when an altercation broke out between two individuals who allegedly belonged to the same political party.

Sources close to the Review Online allege that both men were EFF members. The party’s provincial chairperson, Lawrence Mapoulo, and Limpopo MPL Jacob Lebogo have been approached for comment but had not responded at the time of publication.

Ledwaba said the initial confrontation was reportedly resolved, but the suspect allegedly returned to the scene, confronted the victim and stabbed him in the neck before fleeing.

Emergency Medical Services declared the victim dead at the scene.

Police recovered a knife believed to have been used in the attack, and the suspect was later traced and arrested.

Investigation continues

The motive remains unknown and police investigations are continuing.

The suspect is expected to appear in the Polokwane Magistrate’s Court on Friday on a charge of murder.
