Taxi fare to remain R14 for Greenside commuters

Residents in Greenside say they were promised that taxi fare would not increase for them as the area, made up of Extensions 44 and 40, is closer to the CBD in terms of distance.

POLOKWANE – The Seshego-Polokwane Taxi Association (SPTA) said taxi fare from Greenside to the CBD will remain R14 until a decision has been made by stakeholders.

Residents, in a meeting with SPTA, raised concerns over the increase of their fare from R12 to R14 after receiving two letters with conflicting information.

A resident told the Polokwane Review that one letter stated prices to and from town will remain R12, while another issued late in July said it would increase by R2 to R14.

Residents said they were promised their taxi fares would not increase because Greenside, which is made up of Extensions 44 and 40, is closer to the CBD in terms of distance.

The SPTA requested two days to resolve the confusion and following a meeting on Friday (August 5), spokesperson Ally Hammer said they agreed with the community to take their concerns seriously and hope to find an amicable solution.

“We are still going to have a mass meeting to decide what the best way forward is because the price was initially R12 but technical issues delayed the distribution of the second letter and that caused confusion. We need to remember that these taxis operate from the same taxi rank, which will come as inconvenience to other passengers if the prices are not the same. That is why fares will remain R14 for now until a decision is reached,” he told the Review.
