Mayor says non-resourceful municipal workers should be dismissed

Polokwane Mayor John Mpe said the municipality has introduced a Performance Management System for employees to ensure that slacking is avoided.

POLOKWANE – “You cannot spend the whole day moving around, drinking tea without helping people and expect us to keep you.”

These were the words of Polokwane Mayor John Mpe who during an engagement session with Seshego residents last week insisted that “non-resourceful municipal workers should be dismissed”.

The municipality in the 2022/23 financial year introduced a Performance Management System for employees to ensure that slacking is avoided, he said.

The system often in the form of scorecards, tracks the performance of employees consistently and measurably.

Mpe responded to community members who complained about councillors or municipal workers who they say often refuse to assist them.

Mpe further forewarned those who will soon be appointed as directors of various departments in the municipality to work with diligence or be exposed by the performance management system.

He expressed his dissatisfaction that the community often puts blame on politicians, instead of those who are meant to serve them directly.

“Part of the problem ruining government’s name is workers who do not want to do anything. That is why we need and believe in the Performance Management System,” he continued.

“Our aim is to hire workers who are willing to move with our people at the same pace, if not better, to build a smart city with a metro status. We cannot do that with lazy people,” Mpe added.
